I had the best road trip ever in my Lylo Campervan! The LyLo Campers have a super well thought out fit out - very comfortable and practical on all fronts. You can fly in, collect your van, pick up some food supplies and be on your way with absolutely everything you need to have a great adventure. Being Green Stickered allowed me the freedom to pull up and stay the night in New Zealand's amazing free camping areas which are phenomenal. The van battery also charged each day as I drove, so I was fully self sufficient. The LyLo staff are amazing and had me checked in with a full van tour of how everything works, and provided above and beyond service and on road support which is a lovely piece of mind. I can't recommend LyLo campers enough and will be back for more adventures for sure.

Our experience with Lylo Road Trips was truly phenomenal.

Clarky, the lovely chap responsible for our camper and experience, was so welcoming and communicative the entire time. The van set up was perfect - it had a comfortable bed with nice sheets, pillows and a blanket, plenty of storage space in the van itself, a fridge, cutlery, crockery, and a kettle. It was a dream to drive with amazing assistive technology. The van had so many amazing extras like camping chairs, an induction hob, and a pull out grill and ice box at the back....We would recommend Lylo to all of our friends travelling around New Zealand - we wish you guys all the very best of luck as your van fleet continues to grow.

Absolutely fantastic campervan and an even better team! We rented for nearly three weeks in New Zealand, and it was the trip of a lifetime. Ange and Clarky went above and beyond, they even tracked down ferry tickets for us when I couldn’t find any. Seamless service, amazing van, and an unforgettable adventure. Highly, highly recommend!

Rented a van from Lylo to drive around the north island for 10 days. Everything went perfectly! Pickup was super easy, Angela was super friendly and showed us everything we needed to know about the van. Everything inside the van worked great and was very easy to drive. Would definitely book with Lylo the next time we are here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pick up and drop off in different cities?

Absolutely. You can start in Auckland or Christchurch and finish in the other.
Just note: it depends on availability and one-way fees apply.

Do I need a special licence to drive a van?

No – a full, valid driver’s licence is all you need. Provisional or restricted licences aren’t accepted. If your licence isn’t in English, you’ll need to grab a certified English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Learn more about Driving in New Zealand here.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes. To lock in your LyLo Road Trips adventure, a 20% deposit is payable upon confirmation of your booking. The rest is due 30 days before pick-up.

Booking within 31 days? No worries – you’ll just pay the full amount upfront.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Life happens – we get it. If you need to cancel, let us know as soon as you can. Here’s how it works:

  • More than 31 days before pick-up: Full refund of your deposit
  • 31–15 days before: You’ll pay 25% of hire costs, and we’ll refund 75%
  • 14–7 days before: You’ll pay 50%, and we’ll refund 50%
  • 6–1 days before: You’ll pay 75%, and we’ll refund 25%
  • Within 1 day or no-show: Sorry, no refund
Is insurance included in the rental price?

Yes, insurance is included in the hire. There’s a $5,500 excess if something goes wrong, such as damage to the vehicle or in the event of an accident. Want to cut that down? Pick from our Excess Reduction options:

  • The Inbetweener: $45 per day (drivers aged 26+ years) or $55 per day (drivers aged 21 – 25 years) drops your excess to $2,500.
  • The No Worries: $55 per day (drivers aged 26+ years) or $60 per day (drivers aged 21 – 25 years) takes it all the way down to $0.

Drive happy knowing you’re covered.

What are my options to reduce the insurance excess?

We’ve got three easy insurance options to keep your road trip stress-free.

The No Worries The Inbetweener The Standard
Cost Per Day 26 or older $55 per day $45 per day $0 per day
21-25 years $60 per day $55 per day
Excess $0 $2,500 $5,500
Bond Required* $0 $2,500 $5,500
24 hr breakdown assistance
Glass and Tyre Cover No No
Single vehicle rollover damage

* We’re cash-free, so your bond will be held as a pre-authorisation on your credit card for the duration of your hire. Once your camper comes back with a clean interior, undamaged, and with a full tank of diesel, we’ll release it within 7 days.

I’ve got my own insurance – how does that work with LyLo?

If you’re bringing your own cover, here’s what you need to know:

  • The Standard insurance cover applies automatically to your booking, which means a $5,500 bond will be held as a pre-authorisation on your credit card for the duration of your hire.
  • If there’s any damage, you’ll pay LyLo directly. We’ll give you an invoice so you can claim the cost back from your insurance company.

Just make sure your insurer knows you’re hiring a campervan and check what they cover before you hit the road.

What’s included in my rental?

Your LyLo wheels come road trip ready with linen, cutlery and plates, cooking gear (including your first gas canister), tea towels, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and two outdoor chairs. Just pack your clothes, food, toiletries, and towels – and you’re good to go.

Your daily rate includes the standard $5,500 excess, with optional cover to reduce it. You’ll need to return the van with a full tank of diesel and pay Road User Charges based on kilometres travelled. Bonus: extra drivers are free – just share their licence details with us before hitting the road.

Can I camp or park anywhere I like?

Freedom camping is the ultimate Kiwi road trip freebie – you can stay on public land for $0 in some of the country’s most stunning spots. Whilst it’s free of charge, it’s not free of responsibility. Be sure to know the rules and regulations of the local council and Department of Conservation land you will be camping on, and follow the “leave no trace” principle to keep Aotearoa beautiful.

Want to freshen up? Swing by LyLo Auckland or LyLo Christchurch to swap your linen and recharge before hitting the road again.

For all the details and top tips, check out the Responsible Freedom Camping Guide, and download the Roady App for must see places to park and explore.

What is the difference between the fixed bed and the slide out option?
  • Slide out bed: A comfy couch by day, a bed by night. It allows you a walk-through the van from the front kitchen to the back.
  • Fixed bed: A permanent bed with a hotel-quality mattress and storage drawer underneath.

If your first choice isn’t available, we’ll swap to the other option so you can still road trip.

Is there a toilet in the van?

Yes – every Lylo campervan has a portable cassette toilet, certified for freedom camping, so you can go whenever nature calls.

What should I do if something goes wrong?

Don’t stress – we’ve got you covered. First, reach out to LyLo Support on 0800 427 736 or call, text or WhatsApp 021 796 039. If it’s an emergency, dial 111 for police, fire or ambulance.

If we can’t fix it fast, we’ll guide you through next steps. If the issue is due to driver error, such as keys locked in van or the wrong fuel, the AA will charge you directly between $95 – $165.

What are Road User Charges and how much will they cost me?

Road User Charges (RUC) apply to diesel vehicles in NZ. They’re distance-based fees set by Waka Kotahi to keep the roads in top shape.

For LyLo Road Trips, it works like this:

  • $95 for the first 1,000km
  • Then $9 per 100km (or part thereof)

We buy these in advance for every van, so you don’t have to stress. When you return, we’ll check your kms and charge your card on file for what you’ve used. Simple as that.
